Phonics and Reading
We have developed our own Phonics Progression Document based on the original ‘Letters and Sounds‘ document. Our progression map has been carefully designed to link with our reading scheme (Pearson's Bug Club) and flows through from Reception to KS2.
In Reception, we work on phases 1 – 4 through whole class phonic sessions based on the actions from Jolly Phonics.
In Year 1, the children revise Phases 3 and 4 before being grouped according to which phase they are currently working on. We aim to progress through Phase 5 swiftly in order to equip the children with the reading skills to tackle the Phonics Screening Test, and the segmenting skills to enter Year 2 as confident spellers.
In Year 2 we revisit Phase 5 in order for children to be confident in using alternative graphemes when spelling.
In KS2, children who need more phonics support are targeted to enable them to become fluent readers and spellers through our catch-up programme. This includes quickly assessing and supporting children who arrive from other schools and directly from overseas with limited phonic knowledge.
