Reading:
Our class text will be ‘Malala,’ by Malala Yousafzai as our modern narrative and some non-fiction texts.
As we study these texts, the children will be practising their ability to retrieve key information from texts, use evidence to draw inferences about characters and use evidence to support their responses to questions.

Writing:
We will continue to use the Talk For Writing approach to help us write in a range of genres, including a portal story. 

In maths, we will begin by reviewing our learning on fractions before completing the following units:
Measurement – Time 
Tell and write the time from an analogue clock, including using Roman numerals from I to XII and 12-hour and 24-hour clocks. 
Estimate and read time with increasing accuracy to the nearest minute. 
Record and compare time in terms of seconds, minutes and hours. 
Use vocabulary such as o’clock, a.m./p.m., morning, afternoon, noon and midnight. 
Know the number of seconds in a minute and the number of days in each month, year and leap year. 
Compare durations of events [for example to calculate the time taken by particular events or tasks].

Geometry – Properties of Shapes 
Recognise angles as a property of shape or a description of a turn. 
Identify right angles, recognise that two right angles make a half-turn, three make three quarters of a turn and four a complete turn; identify whether angles are greater than or less than a right angle. 
Identify horizontal and vertical lines and pairs of perpendicular and parallel lines. 
Draw 2D shapes and make 3D shapes using modelling materials. 
Recognise 3D shapes in different orientations and describe them.

• state that it is dangerous to view the sun directly and state precautions used to view the sun, for example in eclipses
• define transparent, translucent and opaque
• describe how shadows are formed

Indoor – Net and Wall Skills – Fundamentals
This ‘Net and Wall Games: Fundamentals’ unit will teach pupils some of the key skills players need to play games that involve either a net or a wall. Children will take part in a range of footwork drills and learn the basic grip for holding a tennis racket. They will learn how to control the ball using a racket, such as balancing and bouncing it, before moving on to learning the basic technique for a forehand and backhand hit. Offensively, they will learn how to accurately hit or throw an object to create space. Defensively, they will learn how positioning is fundamental in net and wall-based games and know where to best position themselves to be able to return the ball.

Outdoor – Invasion Skills – Netball
Pupils will be encouraged to persevere when developing competencies in key skills and principles such as defending, attacking, throwing, catching and shooting. They will learn to use a range of different passes in different situations to keep possession and attack towards goal. Pupils will learn about defending and attacking play as they begin to play even-sided versions of 5-a-side Netball. They will learn key rules of the game such as footwork, held ball, contact and obstruction against.

In our final DT project, Year 3 will be making a desk tidy using a 3D card net. By the end of this unit of work, the children will be able to:

• Select appropriate tools.
• Draw pictures to show what they want to make thinking about the product being fit for purpose.
• Explain what they are making and the tools they are using. 
• Know how to create and assemble 3D nets.
