Subject | Key learning for this unit | |
English | Reading: We will be using the non-fiction text ‘Poems aloud’ and the fiction text ‘Danny and the Champion of the World’ to drive our reading lessons next half term. As we study this text, the children will be practising their ability to retrieve key information from texts, use evidence to draw inferences about the characters and use evidence to support their responses to questions.

Writing: We will be continuing our journey of using ‘Talk for Writing’ as a tool to inspire creativity and enthusiasm in writing. The children will be learning one narrative, The King of Wild Horses and one non- fiction text. They will then innovate them with their own ideas ensuring they include all the grammar learning within the journey.

Science | This half term we will be learning about light and shadows. By the end of the unit the children should be able to describe how we see objects and will be able to describe dark as the absence of light. They will also learn and use the terms, transparent, translucent and opaque. Furthermore, they will be able to explain how shadows are formed. |
RE | We will be continuing to develop our understanding of Hinduism and will focus on the question: How can Brahman be everywhere and in everything? By the end of the unit we will be developing have developed our understanding of the Hindu belief that there is one God with many different aspects. |
PE | In indoor and outdoor PE over the next half term, Year 3 will be introduced to Handball and the rules of the sport. They will be given the opportunity to explore the skills within the sport with a focus on sending and receiving skills. This will be in preparation for an inter school handball competition. |
History | This half term the children will be learning about who invented the railways. They will also learn about how the railways expanded in the UK and the affect that had on the UK. Finally, they will learn about how the railways were affected by the developments of the car and the aeroplane. |
MFL | This half term the children will be learning to Name and recognise up to 10 fruits and vegetables in French. They will be attempting to spell some of these nouns and learn simple vocabulary to facilitate a role play about buying fruits and vegetables from a market stall. Also, they will say which ones they dislike |
Art | This term the children will learn about know the work of Antonio Gaudi. They will create their own mosaic patterns using different materials. For the outcome, the children will make their own animal sculpture from clay and mosaic inspired by Gaudi.

PSHE | This term we will be learning about, ‘Coping with feelings when things Change.’ The children will learn about the importance of change and how it is a natural part of growing up. They will also learn about happiness and sadness and how to show empathy to others. They will be taught the importance of talking to others especially when sad and how to make others and ourselves feel better. |
Music | This term the children will be learning about music from ‘Ancient Worlds’ and music about ‘Food and Drink’. The children will be exploring tuned and untuned percussion to create soothing, repetitive music and singing a song and accompanying it with tuned percussion. Also, the children will learn about exploring musical phrases, melodic imitation and rounds; performing a round in three parts. Moreover, the children will explore simple accompaniments using beat and rhythm patterns. |
Computing | This term Y3 will continue to learn how to show respect and be safe online. They will then go on to learn about the structure and uses of branching databases. |
