Lingua Lab
Lingua lab – Teaching language for life
At St Michael’s almost 60% of our pupils understand languages other than English. There are currently 53 different languages spoken.
Following an assessment of their English language, children who are new to English follow a six-week programme, attending Lingua Lab daily for part of each morning.
The programme follows a topic-based approach introducing learners to everyday language with an emphasis on practical activities and first hand experiences.
Pupils are given the opportunity to develop their Literacy skills in English at an appropriate level.
Following graduation from the programme, pupils are integrated back into the mainstream class. Lingua Lab staff continue to offer support to teachers and pupils as they progress through the school.
The EAL team also monitors the language proficiency of all of St Michael’s bilingual learners and provide additional support where needed.
