Art and Design
Art and Design Subject Intent
At St Michael’s, we offer a curriculum rich in opportunities to develop skills and techniques and experiment with art, which is accomplished in three ways:
- Firstly, we aim to inspire creativity through a knowledge and skills based curriculum. We want children to appreciate the history of art, and be inspired by a wide range of artists (past and present), artistic styles and mediums.
- Next, we provide children with the opportunity to experiment with different mediums and become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and art and craft techniques.
- We ask children to continually reflect on, and then improve, their own creations so they produce high-quality, valued pieces of art work they are proud of.
By the time they leave St Michael’s, our aim is for children to have a broad knowledge of artists and techniques and to have the confidence to explore their ideas creatively as they continue into secondary education and beyond.
Art and Design Implementation - Long Term Progression Map
Art and Design is taught each week every other half term across all year groups Y1-6. It alternates with Design Technology (DT), so children are not taught both at the same time. Below is a progression maps, showing the units of work which are taught in each year group in each term.
Art Key Learning Points
The Art Key Learning Points (KLPs) are the 3 key takeaways from each art unit of work in each year group.
