English | Reading | Writing |
We will be using three different texts to drive our English lessons this half term.
We will become very familiar with these books, read them regularly, ask lots of questions about the stories and retelling them. | This half term we will review how to write a sentence and continue to use Talk for Writing to support the children’s writing. We will be using two different texts and learning these stories to support our understanding of story creation: Room on a Broom and Ben's Bug. We will focus on writing simple sentences that start with a capital letter, using finger spaces between words and a full stop at the end. |
Maths | This half term we will be looking at two units in our scheme of work. Firstly, we will consolidate knowledge of place value to 10. Children will count forwards and backwards, beginning with zero or 1, or from any given number. This unit includes strengthening the children’s understanding of place value, more and less than, representation, comparison and formation. For the second half of the term, we will study addition and subtraction within 10. This will include the part-whole model, introducing the addition symbol, number bonds. |
Science | This half term, we will be looking at parts of the body. Our key objectives are: To label parts of the body on pictures and diagrams. To follow instructions involving parts of the body. Explore objects using different senses. |
RE | This half term the children will be thinking about God. Our key question for the half term is ‘Who made the world? During this topic, pupils are expected to be able to:

History | This half term, we will be looking at the children’s families and our school. Our key objectives are:

Art | This half term, we will be exploring how to mix colours. The children will create a colour wheel by mixing secondary and tertiary colours. The children will then learn about the artist Jackson Pollock and create their own action paintings. |
PSHE | Our focus in PSHE is forming friendships and how kind or unkind behaviours impact other people. The children will talk about and describe their friends, think about times people have been kind or unkind to them and how that made them feel and look at the importance of turn taking and sharing. |
Computing | This term Year 1 will learn how to use iPads safely and appropriately at our school. They will use a painting app to explore tools and techniques to create digital media. |
Music | This half term the children will be exploring sounds, developing their singing voices and creating their own actions to a range of different music. They will learn the meaning of the musical term, beat. |
