This half term, our main text is Asha and the Spirit Bird by Jasbinder Bilan. As we study this text, the children will be looking at authorial choice as well as practising to retrieve key information and infer a character's thoughts. | We will be writing in a range of genres and ensuring that we recap the grammar that the children have learnt throughout their time in Year 5. |
Maths | In Maths, we will be learning about:
Measurement – converting units Understand and use approximate equivalences between metric units and common imperial units such as inches, pounds and pints. Solve problems involving converting between units of time.

Science | This half term, our unit of learning is Living Things and their Habitats. The children will learn about:

RE | Sikhi Our key question for the half term is: Are Sikh stories important today? We will look at some famous Sikh stories and discuss their relevance for Sikhs, and people of other faiths, today. |
PE | Indoor – Target Games – Dodgeball In this unit pupils improve on key skills used in dodgeball such as throwing, dodging, jumping and catching. They learn how to select and apply tactics to the game to outwit their opponent. In dodgeball, pupils achieve this by hitting opponents with a ball whilst avoiding being hit. Pupils are given opportunities to play games independently and are taught the importance of being honest whilst playing to the rules.
Outdoor – Athletics In this unit, pupils are set challenges for distance and time that involve using different styles and combinations of running, jumping and throwing. As in all athletic activities, pupils think about how to achieve their greatest possible speed, height, distance or accuracy and learn how to persevere to achieve their personal best. They learn how to improve by identifying areas of strength as well as areas to develop. Pupils are also given opportunities to lead when officiating as well as observe and provide feedback to others. |

PSHE | In our PSHE lessons, we will discuss how puberty changes can affect our emotions and we will look at ways to manage this. The children will also have the opportunity to ask questions about puberty and change. The additional unit of work is finding out about the work the RNLI do and beach safety. |
Music | This half term the children will explore the topic ' At the movies'. This will take a journey from 1920's animated films until the present day. They will learn the techniques required to create a soundtrack and a film score. They will create and compose their own movie music. |
Computing | This term, Year 5 will learn about video editing. They will then go on to use a BBC Microbit as a data logger. |
French | In French, this half term, the children will be learning to speak about the Olympic Games. |
