This half term we will be focusing on retrieval skills in reading sessions. The children will learn to locate and use a piece of information for a text. We will be looking at the following books this half term.

We will begin our term with a focus on place value of numbers.
By the end of this unit, the children will learn to:

• Read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words.
• Recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (tens, ones). 
• Identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations including the number line. 
• Compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs.
• Use place value and number facts to solve problems.
• Count in steps of 2, 3 and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward and backward.

In the later half of Spring 1, we will begin our unit on addition and subtraction where the children will learn to:

• Recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive and use related facts up to 100. 
• Add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including: a two-digit number and ones; a two-digit number and tens; 2 two-digit numbers; adding 3 one-digit numbers. 

• Sort into living, dead and never lived
• Give key features that mean the animal or plant is suited to its micro-habitat
• Use a food chain to explain what animals eat
• Explain in simple terms why an animal or plant is suited to a habitat e.g. the caterpillar cannot live under the soil like a worm as it needs fresh leaves to eat; the seaweed we found on the beach cannot live in our pond because it is not salty

• Retell a simple version of the creation story from Genesis 1:1-2:3.
• To recognise that creation is the beginning of the big story of the Bible
• To say what the story tells Christians about God, creation and the world
• Give at least two examples of what Christians do to look after the world. 
• Think, talk and ask questions about living in an amazing world. 

• know the difference between atlases and globes
• explore maps and globes to ask questions about the places they see
• use maps and globes to locate the 7 continents and 5 oceans
• describe a few key features of each continent
• understand how water moves around the oceans
• know where the equator is and how places generally get cooler as you move further away from it. 
• revise what a compass is and why they are used
• be able to use the 4 points of a compass to follow directions on a map and create their own 
• Be able to draw a map using symbols from a key. 

• Design a functional and appealing puppet
• Select appropriate materials for their design.
• Join pieces of fabric together using different techniques.
• Evaluate their ideas throughout and their final products. 

This half term the children will be exploring the music genre, Rock. We will look at a range of rock songs from the 1960's, 70's and 80's. We will enjoy them, sing, dance and play along with them using percussion instruments.

This term Y2 will revisit the school’s AUA (Acceptable Use Agreement) for the safe and appropriate use of devices. They will use Beebots to explore creating and debugging sequences of instructions.
