This half term, our main texts are The Astronaut’s Handbook and Oranges in No Man’s Land. We will work on retrieving information from the text and inferring how a character is feeling. | We will be writing a quest story and will be recapping the grammar and punctuation that the children have learnt up until now. |
Maths | This half term, we will have a focus on number. In addition, we will regularly practise times tables. | |
Number – place value | Number – addition and subtraction | |
The children will learn to read, write and compare numbers to at least 1,000,000 and determine the value of each digit. The will solve number problems and practical problems that involve rounding and negative numbers. | The children will add and subtract numbers, mentally, with increasing large numbers. They will use formal written methods (columnar addition and subtraction) to add and subtract numbers with more than four digits. |
Science | This half term, our unit of learning is Earth and Space. The children will:

RE | Christianity Creation and Science: conflicting or complementary? The children will outline the importance of Creation on the timeline of the ‘big story’ of the Bible and identify what type of text some Christians say Genesis 1 is, and its purpose. They will also find out why many Christians find science and faith go together. |
PE | The children will take part in outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA). They will develop their teamwork skills through completion of a number of challenges. In yoga, the children will learn how to improve their strength, flexibility and balance through yoga poses and balances. |
History | In this unit, the children will learn about where and when the Maya Civilisation was dominant. They will find out about Maya religion and how it affected society in addition to finding out about the day-to-day life of the Maya people. As the unit of work comes to an end, the children will find out what caused the Maya Civilisation to lose its dominance and what remains today of the Maya Civilisation. |
D&T | This half term, the children will be preparing food for the homeless community in Bournemouth. They will select from a range of ingredients to make appropriate food products, understanding the difference between fresh and processed ingredients. They will learn about basic food hygiene and the importance of following instructions to control risk. |
PSHE | Healthy and Happy Friendships. This half term, the children will talk about their identity. We will discuss peer pressure off- and online. There will be a focus on positive emotional health and wellbeing. |
Music | This half term the children will be embarking on a musical journey through space. We will listen to a range of composers, learn songs and play instruments all culminating in creating their own space themed piece of music. |
Computing | This term Y5 will revisit the school’s Acceptable Use Agreement and be reminded of the expectations for using devices safely and appropriately. They will learn how computing systems and networks work. In programming, they will explore using repetition in algorithms. |
French | The unit of work is called ‘les planetes'. Children will learn the vocabulary for the planets and solar system including adjectives. Pupils will build towards performing a role-play task in pairs for a pretend interview between an astrophysicist and an astronaut preparing for a space expedition. |
