Summer 1
English | Reading | Writing |
We will be reading ‘Holes’ this half-term. This text has a dual-narrative, which we will be using to discuss authors’ choices and make predictions using information from the text. We will be continuing to develop making inferences based on characters thoughts and feelings and use evidence to support these. | This half-term, we will be building up our evidence base, which we will use to assess the children’s writing come the end of the year. We will be applying all of the skills taught across Key Stage One and Two across a range of genres. The children will develop their editing and re-drafting skills. |
Maths | We will be continuing to cover the Year Six curriculum this half term as well as revising some key topics with the children before the SATs tests. These topics will include: ratio and algebra, statistics, 2d shapes, graphs (pie charts, bar and line graphs), and angles on a straight line and around a point. |
Science | Our focus for science this half term is light. By the end of the topic, the children will be able to describe, with diagrams/models, how light travels in straight lines either from sources or reflected from other objects into our eyes. They will also be able to describe how light travels in straight lines past translucent or opaque objects to form a shadow of the same shape. When working scientifically during an experiment, the children will predict and explain how the path of light rays can be directed by reflection to be seen. |
RE | We will be studying Islam this term and our key question for the first part of our topic is: What is the best way for a Muslim to show commitment to God? During this, we will study the five pillars of Islam and consider how Muslims show their relationship with Allah. |
PE | In the next half term, Year 6 will be improving their knowledge and skills within athletics. This will include: running, jumping and throwing. In addition, pupils will take part in a range of fitness challenges, developing different components of fitness including speed, stamina, strength, co-ordination, balance and agility. Pupils will be given opportunities to work at their maximum and improve their fitness levels. They will be asked to recognise their strengths and areas in which they have the most improvement. There will also be swimming for certain pupils, which will include improving their skills on the different strokes and improving their knowledge in swim safety and how to self-rescue. |
History | This half term, the children will be studying how technology has changed since the end of the Second World War. This will include the development of computers and the invention of the World Wide Web. By the end of the unit, the children will be able to explain what the World Wide Web is and discuss how technology has changed between the invention of the first computer to increased use of smartphones. |
MFL | The children will be building on their understanding of verbs this half-term and will be studying irregular verbs. They will be able to conjugate some French verbs from memory and use more than just the first person, singular form of a verb. |
Art | The skill that we will be focussing on this half term will be using perspective accurately when drawing. The children will be studying the artist Fillipo Brunelleschi and imitating how he has been able to use perspective in his work. They will also develop their ability to express their ideas and observations then respond to advice from others to re-work and improve design ideas. |
PSHE | We will be considering ‘Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds’ this half-term. This involves thinking about ‘Being the healthiest me: ongoing self-care of bodies and minds, including ways to prevent and manage mental ill-health.’ |
Music | This half term the children are going to continue using the GarageBand music application on the iPads. The children will be exploring the 'Live Loops' section to create their own music, including beats, melodies and rhythms then perform them to the group |
Computing | This term Y6 will continue to reflect on their use of technology and the impact of behaviour choices online. They will go on to learn how to use vectors in a drawing program. |
