Summer 1
English | Reading | Writing |
We will be finishing ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’ then moving on to read ‘Holes’ this half-term. This text has a dual-narrative, which we will be using to discuss authors’ choices and make predictions using information from the text. We will be continuing to develop making inferences based on characters thoughts and feelings and use evidence to support these. | This half term, we will spend time revising previously taught grammar and punctuation to prepare for the upcoming SATs. We will begin to write texts from a wide range of genres, thinking carefully about the purpose and audience, and selecting vocabulary and grammatical structures to suit. Text types will include a witness statement, a setting description and a suspense narrative. |
Maths | In maths, we will be studying statistics by interpreting data in line graphs, dual bar charts and in pie charts. The children will also learn how to calculate the mean average of a data set. We will then move on to look at the properties of shape including how to measure, draw and calculate angles, including reflex angles and angles inside polygons. Finally, we will revise different units of measure which will include comparing metric and imperial measurements. |
Science | Our focus for science this half term is light. By the end of the topic, the children will be able to describe, with diagrams/models, how light travels in straight lines either from sources or reflected from other objects into our eyes. They will also be able to describe how light travels in straight lines past translucent or opaque objects to form a shadow of the same shape. When working scientifically during an experiment, the children will predict and explain how the path of light rays can be directed by reflection to be seen. |
RE | We will be studying Islam this term and our key question for the first part of our topic is: What is the best way for a Muslim to show commitment to God? During this, we will study the five pillars of Islam and consider how Muslims show their relationship with Allah. |
PE | Indoor – Dance | Outdoor – Net and wall games - Volleyball |
In this unit, pupils continue to use their knowledge of compositional principles e.g. how to use variations in level, direction and pathway, how to combine and link actions, how to relate to a partner and apparatus, when developing sequences. They build trust when working collaboratively in larger groups, using formations to improve the aesthetics of their performances. Pupils are given opportunities to receive and provide feedback in order to make improvements on performances. In gymnastics as a whole, pupils develop performance skills considering the quality and control of their actions. | Volleyball is a net and wall game. In this unit pupils develop their understanding of the principles of net and wall games. In all games activities, pupils have to think about how they use skills, strategies and tactics to outwit the opposition. In volleyball, they do this by placing an object away from an opponent to make it difficult for them to return. Pupils are given opportunities to work in collaboration with others, play fairly demonstrating an understanding of the rules, as well as being respectful of the people they play with and against. |
History | This half term, the children will be studying how technology has changed since the end of the Second World War. This will include the development of computers and the invention of the World Wide Web. By the end of the unit, the children will be able to explain what the World Wide Web is and discuss how technology has changed between the invention of the first computer to increased use of smartphones. |
MFL | The children will be building on their understanding of verbs this half-term and will be studying irregular verbs. They will be able to conjugate some French verbs from memory and use more than just the first person, singular form of a verb. |
Art | The skill that we will be focussing on this half term will be using perspective accurately when drawing. The children will be studying the artist Fillipo Brunelleschi and imitating how he has been able to use perspective in his work. They will also develop their ability to express their ideas and observations then respond to advice from others to re-work and improve design ideas. |
PSHE | We will be considering ‘Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds’ this half-term. This involves thinking about ‘Being the healthiest me: ongoing self-care of bodies and minds, including ways to prevent and manage mental ill-health.’ |
Music | This term the children will re visit learning the Ukulele. They will use their previous knowledge to play a song containing a range of chords and a melody. They will perform individually and as a group and they will learn a new song with familiar chords. |
Computing | This In Online Safety lessons this term, Y6 will discuss how to check whether messages online are genuine. They will learn to use ‘Canva’ to create digital media. |
