Area of Learning | Key Learning for this Unit | |
Communication and Language | This half term we are working on developing vocabulary by introducing a new word each day linked to our ‘talk for writing’ key texts. We are encouraging children to share their ideas in class discussions and promoting language in their play. We spend time reflecting on the children’s learning both in school and at home and provide opportunities for children to share their ideas and news in class.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development | We will continue to support children to identify and talk about their feelings. We will focus on supporting your child to develop resilience and foster a willingness to attempt new and challenging activities i.e. writing words using their phonics/ colouring a picture inside the lines. We will encourage your child to talk about the feeling of others and promote positive relationships.

Physical Development | We will continue provide children with opportunities to develop core muscle strength through weekly bike riding sessions and daily use of the play trail each day. We will continue to develop fine motor skills through daily ‘Funky Fingers’ sessions. This half term we are going to place a focus on pencil grip, picking up and positioning a pencil correctly. We will encourage children to mark make and write in their play.

English | Reading | Writing |
This half term children in reception we will be starting phase 3 phonics and will be introduced to digraphs (two letters that make one sound i.e. ‘ch’). The children will have a reading book sent home and we will be working hard to support your child with blending to read short words. We will continue to promote an interest in reading by sharing a range of stories both familiar and unfamiliar.
How can you support your child at home?
| This half term we are going to use the ‘talk for writing approach’ to support children to orally rehearse full sentences. We are going to explore characters in stories and then use these to tell our own stories. The children will be practicing writing short words to caption or label a picture. We will continue to use phonics sessions to help the children to identify the initial sound in a word and practise writing recognisable letters.

Maths | We will continue to explore the concept of subitizing and compare quantity using the language more and fewer. Children will develop verbal counting up to 10 and ensure that children are correctly matching 1:1 correspondence using fingers, Numicon, counters and other physical objects.

Expressive Arts and Design | This half term we will encouraging children to join in singing familiar songs and nursery rhymes including number rhymes. We will provide opportunities for children to access a range of small world resources as well as a role-play area set up as a home. We will continue to support your child in cutting straight lines and provide a variety of materials to explore i.e. paint and collage.
